proposes rules to be observed by the monks for the Antonians Maronites, approved by Clement XII, though certain changes made in them by the S. Congregation of Propaganda Fide are to be made known,
GREGORY PP. XVI.
to the perpetual memory of the matter.

1 The institutes of monks, which by a stricter way of life and the particular exercise of Christian virtues add an ornament to the Catholic Church, We willingly strengthen with the force of Our apostolic authority.

2 Now indeed, since the Chaldean monks dwelling in the convent of St. Hormisdas not far from the city of Mosul in Mesopotamia have humbly besought Us to confirm their institute, We, taking counsel with the venerable brothers of Ours, the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church presiding over the Propagation of the Faith, have deemed it fitting to accede to their wishes.

3 Therefore, wishing to regard with special benevolence all and each to whom these letters pertain, and absolving and holding as absolved from any excommunication and interdict and other ecclesiastical censures, sentences and penalties imposed in any manner and for whatever cause, should they perchance have incurred any, for this reason alone, We do by Our apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents, confirm and approve in perpetuity the aforesaid institute of Chaldean monks, called by the title of St. Hormisdas, of the order nevertheless of St. Anthony the Abbot, to which We likewise propose the rules already approved for the monks of the Antonians of the Maronite nation by the constitution of Our predecessor of happy memory Clement XII, which begins Misericordiarum Pater, with certain modifications however added suitable to the nation and places according to the instruction to be delivered by the same congregation of the Propagation of the Faith.

4 Decreeing that these letters are firm, valid and efficacious and shall be, and shall produce and obtain their full and complete effects, and that they shall be of the fullest force in all things and through all things; and thus in the aforesaid matters by any judges ordinary and delegated, even auditors of causes of the apostolic palace, judgment and decision ought to be made, and null and void, should it happen that anything contrary to these be attempted by anyone whatsoever with any authority, knowingly or unknowingly.

5 Given at Rome at St. Mary Major under the fisherman's ring on the twenty-sixth day of September in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty-five, in the fifteenth year of Our pontificate.
