SASSANDRENSIS II VICARIATU APOSTOLICO A LITORE EBURNEO TERRITORII PARS SEIUNGUITUR ET NOVUS ERIGITUR VICARIATUS APOSTOLICUS SASSANDRENSIS.

FROM THE VICARIATE APOSTOLIC OF THE IVORY COAST A PART OF THE TERRITORY IS SEPARATED AND A NEW APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF SASSANDRA IS ERECTED. PIUS, BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD, FOR PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE OF THIS MATTER
1 In order that the work of evangelization may be more suitably provided for within the boundaries of the Apostolic Vicariate of the Ivory Coast, in French West Africa, it has seemed most useful to divide its very extensive territory and to establish another Vicariate there. Wherefore We, having taken counsel with the venerable Brethren Our Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church presiding over the Sacred Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith, having maturely considered the matter, and having supplied, insofar as it is necessary, the consent of those to whom it pertains or who presume that it pertains to them, by the fullness of Our Apostolic power, do separate and sever the entire part of the aforesaid territory of the Vicariate of the Ivory Coast situated on the right bank of the Bandama River, excepting only that small portion of this region which, although it lies on the right bank of the Bandama River itself near the place called Tiassalé, nevertheless belongs to the civil district of Abidjan, and We erect and constitute the territory thus formed into a new Apostolic Vicariate, which We decree shall be called Sassandren, from the name of the principal city in that territory. This new Vicariate of Sassandra We entrust to the care of the members of the Society for Missions to the Africans, who labor so diligently in that region, yet at Our pleasure and that of the Apostolic See; and to it and to its Apostolic Vicars for the time being We grant all the rights, privileges, honors and powers which other Vicariates throughout the world and their Prelates enjoy and possess by common law; and We likewise bind them by the same burdens and obligations by which the others are bound. All these things, as disposed and constituted above, We will and command to be valid and binding, notwithstanding anything to the contrary. Moreover, We will that copies or excerpts of these Letters, even if printed, provided they are subscribed by the hand of some public notary and furnished with the seal of a man constituted in ecclesiastical dignity or office, shall have the same force as these presents would have if exhibited or shown themselves. Let no one be permitted to infringe this page of Our separation, erection, constitution, commission, statute and will, or to act contrary to it. If anyone, however, shall presume to attempt this with rash audacity, let him know that he will incur the indignation of Almighty God and of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.
2 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, in the year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty, on the ninth day of April, in the second year of Our Pontificate.
