PIO

AEDES AETERNAE SAPIENTIAE DICATA, INTRA ROMANAE STUDIORUM UNIVERSI- TATIS SAEPTA SANCTAE SEDIS SUMPTIBUS EXTRUCTA, STUDIO URBIS PRO CATHOLICOCULTUDONATUR. PIUS
Eam igitur, pactionis eiusdem tenore cultui tantum Catholico in perpetuum destinatam, dilecto filio Iosepho Cardinali, doctori, hodierno Rectori Magnifico, hisce Litteris Nostris publice tradimus.

A BUILDING DEDICATED TO ETERNAL WISDOM, ERECTED WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF THE ROMAN UNIVERSITY OF STUDIES AT THE EXPENSE OF THE HOLY SEE, IS GIVEN TO THE CITY FOR CATHOLIC CULTURE. PIUS
1 To perpetual memory of the matter. — Following in the footsteps of the Roman Pontiffs, Our Predecessors, We pursue young men, students of the Academies, with particular love and strive with all effort that, while they are engaged in studies, piety may be joined to learning and the practice of virtues. Wherefore it has come to pass not without considerable joy to Us that by this Apostolic See and by the Roman University of Studies on the thirtieth day of June, in the year nineteen hundred and forty-seven, it was happily established that within the bounds of the same University there should be erected a Building dedicated to Eternal Wisdom, which should be open both to teachers and students and to the citizens of Rome.
2 These agreements, with many most distinguished witnesses both from the Vatican City and from the same Athenaeum, were signed by Our most beloved Son Raphael Charles, Presbyter Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church Rossi, in the name of the Holy See and by Our authority, and also by Our beloved son Joseph Caronia, doctor, at that time Rector Magnificus of the Roman University of Studies. To Us, therefore, who are not ignorant of the institutions of religion, the memories and monuments of the most ancient Roman Athenaeum called of Wisdom, in which a few centuries ago was conspicuously constructed, by the genius and work of Francis Borromini, the Oratory of St. Ivo for the spiritual benefit of teachers and students, it seemed fitting, especially in the year in which We Ourselves solemnly enrolled Contardo Ferrini, formerly a professor in the Italian Universities of Studies, among the Blessed Inhabitants of Heaven, to accede to the pious and earnest prayers which the teachers and students of the new Roman Athenaeum made to Us. Wherefore We have resolved to give in perpetuity to the same University of the City the sacred Building, now erected at Our expense from the aforesaid agreement. This Building, therefore, destined by the tenor of the same agreement to Catholic worship in perpetuity, We publicly deliver by these Our Letters to Our beloved son Joseph, Cardinal, doctor, the present Rector Magnificus. And indeed We are fully confident that this building, dedicated to the honor of Eternal Wisdom within the bounds of the Roman University of Studies, will thus serve to promote the true good of young men, and will of itself so strike their minds that, while they apply themselves to the investigation of disciplines and to excellent studies, as befits them, they may be driven to seek those things which lead to things above and heavenly, which testify to Eternal Truth and turn minds to God, the Lord of all sciences. We decree, establish, and ordain that these Our Letters shall remain firm, valid, and effective in perpetuity and shall endure; and that they shall obtain and secure their full and complete effects; and that they shall most fully avail for those to whom they pertain or may pertain, now and in the future; and thus they are to be rightly judged and determined; and that anything done contrary to these provisions by anyone, by whatever authority, knowingly or unknowingly, shall be rendered null and void from now on.
3 Given at Rome, at St. Peter, under the Fisherman's Ring, in the month of March, in the year nineteen hundred and fifty, in the twelfth year of Our Pontificate.
