S. CONGREGATIO DE RELIGIOSIS DECRETUM DE PROFESSIONE RELIGIOSA IN MORTIS PERICULO PERMITTENDA.

3 Quapropter sanctissimus Dominus noster Pius PP.

S. CONGREGATION FOR RELIGIOUS DECREE ON PROFESSION OF RELIGION TO BE PERMITTED IN DANGER OF DEATH.

1 Wishing to provide spiritual consolation to the Novices of St. Dominic, and lest they be deprived of the merit of heavenly religious profession, which professed nuns enjoy by the benignity of the Holy See, St. Pius V, by Constitution Summi Sacerdotii given on 23 August 1570, granted and indulged that whenever any of these Novices not yet professed should be seen, by the judgment of some physician, to be about to depart from this world, she herself, provided she were of lawful age, might be able in the article of death to make regular profession before the completion of her novitiate; and thus Novices so approaching might obtain the indulgences and other graces which truly professed nuns obtained. Nor did he fail to grant to these nuns, novices thus professed and dying, a plenary indulgence and remission of their sins in the form of a Jubilee.

2 This favor, by virtue of the communication of privileges, was extended to all nuns and religious men who share in privileges with the Dominican family. A similar privilege was afterwards obtained by other religious Institutes from the Roman Pontiff in particular, or a provision was introduced in their Constitutions approved by the Holy See by which it was permitted to receive profession before the completion of the novitiate of Novices who were in danger of death. Indeed, there are not lacking religious Superiors who, thinking they can make Novices lying dangerously ill participants in any of the spiritual goods of their Institute, admit them even to perpetual profession.

3 Wherefore our most holy Lord Pius X, in an audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect on 3 September 1912, in order that all doubts in so grave a matter be removed, and wishing to extend this privilege for the good of souls, deigned to establish these things: In any Order whatsoever, or in any Congregation or religious Society, or monastery whether of men or women, or even in Institutes in which, although vows are not professed, life is nevertheless lived in common after the manner of Religious, it shall be permitted henceforth to admit Novices or Probationers who by the judgment of physicians are gravely ill, so that they are constituted in the article of death, to profession or consecration or promise according to their own Rules or Constitutions, although the time of novitiate or probation has not yet been completed. Official.

4 mentur, to profession or consecration or promise according to their own Rules or Constitutions, although the time of novitiate or probation has not yet been completed.

5 However, in order that novices or probationers may be admitted to the aforesaid profession or consecration or promise, it is necessary: 1. That they have canonically begun their novitiate or probation.

6 2. The Superior who admits the Novice or Probationer to profession or consecration or promise shall be he who actually governs the monastery or novitiate or probation house.

7 3. The formula of profession or consecration or promise shall be the same as is in use in the Institute outside the case of illness; and vows, if pronounced, shall be pronounced without determination of time or perpetuity. 4. Whoever shall have made such profession, consecration or promise shall be a participant in all the indulgences, suffrages and graces which truly professed Religious in the same Institute obtain upon dying; and to the same person a plenary indulgence and remission of his sins in the form of a Jubilee is mercifully granted in the Lord. 5. This profession or consecration or promise, apart from the graces set forth in the preceding article, produces absolutely no other effect. Therefore:

8 A) if the Novice or Probationer after such profession or consecration or promise dies intestate, the Institute can claim for itself no goods or rights pertaining to him; B) if he recovers before the time of novitiate or probation expires, he shall be in exactly the same condition as if he had made no profession; and therefore: a) he can freely return to the world if he wishes; and b) Superiors can dismiss him; c) he must complete the entire time of novitiate or probation defined in each Institute, even if it exceeds a year; d) this time having been completed, if he perseveres, a new profession or consecration or promise shall be made.

9 Notwithstanding anything to the contrary.
