ADALBERO I, bishop of METZ. - He was elected bishop of Metz in 929, promoted and carried out the restoration of many abbeys, including those of Gorze (933), Saint-Arnoul (942), Sainte-Glossinde (944-948), Saint-Clément (c. 946), etc., for which he was called the “father of monks.” When Louis IV occupied Lorraine (940), A. defended Metz against Otto I, but when this region returned again to Germany, he served the emperor faithfully. He died, the exact date is uncertain, either on 23 February or 26 April 987.
