ADALBERONE I, bishop of METZ. — He was elected bishop of Metz in 929 and promoted and carried out the restoration of many abbeys, including those of Gorze (933), Saint-Arnoul (942), Sainte-Glossilde (944–948), Saint-Clément (ca. 946), etc.; hence he was called «pater monachorum». When Lodovico IV occupied Lorraine (940), A. defended Metz against Otto I, but when this region once again came under Germany, he served the emperor faithfully. He died, though it is not known for certain whether on 23 February or 26 April 987.
