ADONISEDEC (Hebrew «My Lord is Justice»; Septuagint: Adonibezec). - Amorite king of Jerusalem at the time when Israel, led by Joshua, penetrated into Palestine.

When the Israelites had captured Jericho and Ai, and the Gibeonites by a stratagem joined themselves to them, A. allied himself with the Canaanite kings Gham of Hebron, Pharan of Jerimoth, Japhia of Lachish and Dabir of Eglon. Besieged by the five kings, the Gibeonites asked the help of Joshua, who went by night from Gilgal to Gibeon and defeated the five allied kings, whom he pursued as far as Beth-horon, Azekah and Makkedah. Having exterminated the Canaanite-Amorite army with the aid of miracles (stones from heaven, the stopping of the sun), Joshua captured A. and the other four kings, shut up in a cave at Makkedah, made them be trampled underfoot by the leaders of Israel, then executed them. The five corpses were hung on five gallows until evening, then buried in the cave (Josh. 10:1-27).
