AGAPITO da PALESTRINA. - Reformed Franciscan, d. 1815; he was lecturer in theology and general definitor of his Order, censor of the theological Academy of the Sapienza, consultor of the Index and of the Holy Office.
A vehement opponent of the doctrine of probabilism, he combated it vigorously in his works: Esame critico-teologico di quanto ha scritto il Ch. Abate D. G. Bolgeni... (Rome 1799); Idea genuina della carità o amor di Dio... (Rome
1800); Lettera d'avviso ad un confessore novello... (Rome 1805). In the first two works he attacks Fr. Bolgeni and in the third Fr. F. Salvatori, both belonging to the then suppressed Society of Jesus, especially because they exempted penitents from the accusation of doubtful sins and aggravating circumstances. The controversy subsided with the decree of Pius VII (1803), which declared probabilism free from censure. He also published: Lezioni devote (Rome 1792) and Notizie storiche intorno ai luoghi di Terra Santa (Rome 1793).
