AGAPITUS OF PALESTRINA. - Reformed Minor, d. 1815; he was a lecturer in theology and definitor general of his Order, censor of the Theological Academy of the Sapienza, consultor of the Index and of the Holy Office.

A bitter opponent of the doctrine of probabilism, he fought it vigorously in his works: Esame critico-teologico di quanto ha scritto il Ch. Abate D. G. Bolgeni... (Rome 1799); Idea genuina della carità o amor di Dio... (Rome

1800); Lettera d'avviso ad un confessore novello... (Rome 1805). In the first two works he inveighs against Fr. Bolgeni and in the third against Fr. F. Salvatori, both belonging to the then suppressed Society of Jesus, especially because they exempted penitents from the accusation of doubtful sins and of aggravating circumstances. The polemic subsided with the decree of Pius VII (1803) which declared probabilism immune from censure. He also published: Lezioni devote (Rome 1792) and Notizie storiche intorno ai luoghi di Terra Santa (Rome 1793).
