AHLBORN, AUGUSTO GUGLIELMO GIULIO. — Landscape painter, born at Hannover in 1796, died in Rome in 1857. A pupil of the Berlin Academy, he followed Schinkel’s neoclassical manner, demonstrating a particular sensitivity to the grand rhythms and coloration of southern nature, which, from Lake Garda to Sicily, suggested suitable subjects to him. Having later converted to Catholicism, he also painted Madonnas and Saints after fifteenth-century models; having become mentally ill, he was eventually forced to abandon painting altogether.
