AHLBORN, AUGUSTO GUGLIELMO GIULIO. - Landscape painter, b. at Hannover in 1796, d. in Rome in 1857. A pupil of the Berlin academy, he followed the neoclassical manner of Schinkel, showing a particular sensitivity for the grand rhythms and the coloring of southern nature, which from Lake Garda to Sicily suggested suitable motifs to him. Having later converted to Catholicism, he also painted Madonnas and Saints after fifteenth-century models; having become mentally infirm, he was at last forced to renounce painting entirely.
