AIMERICO de MALIFAYE. — Died in 1196. From 1142 he was Latin Patriarch of Antioch. Firmly defending the city against the Muslims and divine rights against the kings and princes of the West in the Holy Land, he endured severe conflicts. Around 1160 he restored cenobitic life on Mount Carmel, appointing his relative Bertoldo as the first general prior over the hermits. He is credited with having brought the Maronites of Lebanon into unity with the Roman Church in 1183.
