AIMERIC DE MALIFAYE. - Died in 1196. From 1142 he was Latin patriarch of Antioch. Most steadfast in the defense of the city against the Muslims and of divine rights against the kings and Western princes of the Holy Land, he had to endure very serious conflicts. Around 1160 he restored the cenobitic life on Mount Carmel, placing his relative Berthold over the hermits as prior general. To him remains the merit of having brought the Maronites of Lebanon into the unity of the Roman Church in 1183.
