AIMERICO de MALIFAYE. – Died in 1196. From 1142 he was Latin patriarch of Antioch. Extremely steadfast in defending the city against the Muslims and divine rights against the kings and princes of the Western Holy Land, he had to endure the gravest conflicts. Around 1160 he restored the cenobitic life on Carmel, placing his relative Bertold over the hermits as general prior. He retains the merit of having brought the Maronites of Lebanon into the unity of the Roman Church in 1183.
