AINALOV, Dimitri Vasilevic. — Russian art historian, disciple of Kondakov, b. 1862, d. 1939. Despite his pedagogical activity in the faculties of Byzantine and Paleo-Russian art at the Universities of Kazan and Saint Petersburg, he left a rich literary legacy. He was the first to defend the Hellenistic foundations of Byzantine art (Saint Petersburg 1900).
His work on the Musicians of the 4th and 5th Centuries (ibid. 1895) remains of fundamental importance. Other works of greater interest include: Byzantine Painting of the 14th Century (Petrograd 1917), in Russian like the others already mentioned; Geschichte der russischen Monumentalkunst der vormoskovitischen Zeit (Berlin 1932) and Zur Zeit des Grossfürstentums Moskau (ibid. 1933).
