AINALOV, DIMITRI VASILEVIC. - Russian art historian, disciple of Kondakov, b. in 1862, d. in 1939. Despite his teaching activity in the faculties of Byzantine and Old Russian Art at the Universities of Kazan and Petersburg, he left a rich literary legacy. He was the first to uphold The Hellenistic Foundations of Byzantine Art (Petersburg 1900).

His work on The Mosaics of the Fourth and Fifth Centuries (ibid. 1895) remains of fundamental importance. Other works of greater interest are: Byzantine Painting of the Fourteenth Century (Petrograd 1917), in Russian like the others already mentioned; Geschichte der russischen Monumentalkunst der vormoskovitischen Zeit (Berlin 1932) and Zur Zeit des Grossfürstentums Moskau (ibid. 1933).
