ALEMANNO, JOHANAN. - Jewish Platonizing philosopher, born, according to some, in Constantinople, but who lived in Florence in the second half of the 15th century. He was among the humanists protected by Lorenzo the Magnificent. Pico della Mirandola was his friend and had him as a teacher of Hebrew and of cabbala. In his exegetical works on the Song of Songs (Hēleq Šēlōmōh "The Desire of Solomon", cf. I Kings 9:1) and on the Pentateuch ('Ēnē hā-'ēdāh: "The Eyes of the Synagogue", cf. Num. 14:36) allegory for philosophical purposes prevails. Moral Platonism stands out in The Living One for Eternity (Haj hā-'ōlāmīm), on the way to reach union with God. His works, for the most part unpublished, are imperfectly known.
