He studied in the Milanese seminaries and was ordained a priest on 20 Sept. 1870. From July 1870 he had been engaged as a writer at the Ambrosian Library by Msgr. Antonio Ceriani (v.), under whose guidance he studied Hebrew and Syriac and perfected himself in paleography and diplomatics.
As a young man he was proficient in music and singing, and with the maestro Paolo Bonanomi he studied harmony and counterpoint. He was the first in Italy to champion with apostolic zeal, if not always with success, the ideas of reform of sacred chant that were especially gaining ground in Germany. To this end he founded in Milan and directed from 1877 to 1885 the periodical Musica Sacra.
In 1885, having changed his baptismal name, Guerrino, to that of Ambrogio Maria, he entered the Benedictine Order at Montecassino, where he devoted himself entirely to historical research; there he was prior and archivist. In 1908 he was appointed titular abbot of the Abbey of Florence, in 1916 vice-president of the pontifical Commission for the revision of the Vulgate. His activity was very fruitful in articles and pamphlets on biblical, patristic, liturgical and musical subjects. To him is due, among other things, the discovery (1882) of the libellus of appeal of Flavian to PopeLeo the Great.
