**ALBANÈS, Joseph-Mathias-Hyacinthe.** – Priest and ecclesiastical historian, born at Auriol (Bouches-du-Rhône) on 24 February 1822, died at Marseilles on 3 March 1897. Notable are his works on hagiography and Provençal history, which earned him the Legion of Honour in 1889.
Among these, worthy of mention are those on the Blessed Pope Urban V (Paris 1897). He also compiled several volumes of the *Catalogue général des manuscrits des bibliothèques publiques de France* and the *Gallia christiana novissima*, which is a history of the archbishops, bishoprics, and abbeys of southern France based on the registers of the Vatican and local archives, published posthumously in seven volumes under the editorship of U. Chevalier (Montbéliard 1899–1920); however, the criteria followed by the editor are highly questionable, with the result that the work does not always meet the demands of historical criticism.
