ÁLVAREZ DE TOLEDO, JUAN

JUAN ÁLVAREZ DE TOLEDO. — Cardinal, born in 1488 to the Dukes of Alba, died in 1557. He entered the Dominican order at San Esteban in Salamanca. He became Bishop of Córdoba (1523), of Burgos (1537), Cardinal (1538), and Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela (1550). Julius III appointed him head of the Roman Inquisition (1553). He later served as Bishop of Albano (1553) and of Frascati (1555).
