Álvarez de Toledo, Juan

ÁLVAREZ de TOLEDO, JUAN. - Cardinal, b. in 1488 to the dukes of Alba, d. in 1557. He took the Dominican habit at St. Stephen's in Salamanca. He became bishop of Cordova (1523), of Burgos (1537), cardinal (1538), archbishop of St. James of Compostela (1550). Julius III placed him at the head of the Roman Inquisition (1553). He was then bishop of Albano (1553) and of Frascati (1555).
