ÁLVAREZ de TOLEDO, JUAN. — Cardinal, born in 1488 to the dukes of Alba, died in 1557. He took the Dominican habit at S. Stefano di Salamanca. He became bishop of Cordova (1523), of Burgos (1537), cardinal (1538), and archbishop of S. Giacomo di Compostella (1550). Julius III placed him at the head of the Roman Inquisition (1553). He was subsequently bishop of Albano (1553) and of Frascati (1555).
