AMARI, EMERICO. - Politician and thinker, b. in Palermo in 1810, d. there in 1870. A complex personality as a scholar, patriot and believer. Imprisoned (1848) and an exile, he returned to Palermo in 1860; after having taken part in parliamentary life, not seeing his synthesis of national unity and regional autonomy, of liberalism and Catholicism, brought to realization, he stood apart. From legal, statistical, economic and other studies he rose to Vichian views, critically renewed, of the philosophy of history, and was called to that chair in Florence in Dec. 1859.
He sketched a Teoria del Progresso (1843) as « continuous reform indicated by science and accomplished by liberty by means of tradition ». His Critica di una Scienza delle Legislazioni comparate (1857) enjoyed fame, and would deserve a broad re-examination; it determines the concept, discusses the methods, outlines the system and indicates the auxiliary sciences of this « new science ». Also noteworthy is the Florentine inaugural lecture Del concetto generale e dei sommi principi della filosofia della storia (with a taking of position before St. Augustine, Dante, Machiavelli, Bossuet, Vico, Lessing, Hegel, Romagnosi, Guizot, etc.).
