ARNOLDO OF BOHÉRIES. - Cistercian monk of Bohéries (diocese of Laon, today Soissons), who probably lived at the end of the 12th century. He became famous only when B. Tissier, the editor of the Bibliotheca Patrum Cisterciensium (vol. VI, Bonnefontaine 1664, p. 138), later followed by J. Mabillon, Migne, etc., attributed to him the Speculum Monachorum, also called Speculum Bernardi.

A very brief work (PL 184, 1175-78) but substantial, "brevis formula sanctae et bonae conversationis", this summary of spirituality (which expressly draws on the Rule of St. Benedict) gives advice on psalmody, on spiritual reading, on manual labor, and recommends, with particular insistence, the examination of conscience, private confession and - "summa philosophia" - the assiduous meditation of death. Its influence on the later monastic milieu was great.
