ASAM. - Family of German artists. HANS GEORG, painter and stucco-worker (Rotterdam c. 1646–1711), worked in various monasteries and churches in Bavaria (Tegern-
see, Benediktbeuren, etc.). He had two sons: EGID QUIRIN (Tegensee 1692–Mannheim 1750) and KOSMAS DAMIAN (Benediktbeuren 1686–Weltenburg 1739). Through their artistic training in Rome, Italian ornamental art entered Bavaria and flourished there. Masterpieces by the two brothers are the decorations of S. Jacopo in Innsbruck, of the cathedral of Frisinga, and above all the construction and decoration of the monastery of Weltenburg and of the church of S. Giovanni Nepomuceno in Monaco. Kosmas Damian also worked in Rome with Giuseppe Ghezzi (v.); he painted in the Trinità in Monaco and in the monastery of Weingarten, where he executed large frescoes. He is one of the most important Bavarian painters of the eighteenth century.
