ASAM. - Family of German artists. HANS GEORG, painter and stucco worker (Rotterdam ca. 1646 - 1711), worked in various monasteries and churches of Bavaria (Tegernsee, Benediktbeuren, etc.). He had two sons: EGID QUIRIN (Tegensee 1692-Mannheim 1750) and KOSMAS DAMIAN (Benediktbeuren 1686-Weltenburg 1739). Through their artistic training in Rome, Italian ornamental art penetrated into Bavaria and flourished there. Masterpieces of the two brothers are the decorations of St. James in Innsbruck, of the cathedral of Freising and above all the construction and decoration of the monastery of Weltenburg and of the church of St. John Nepomucene in Munich. Kosmas Damian also worked in Rome with Giuseppe Ghezzi (v.); he painted in the Trinity church in Munich and in the monastery of Weingarten, where he executed large frescoes. He is one of the most important Bavarian painters of the eighteenth century.
