ASAM

ASAM. – A family of German artists. Hans GEORG, painter and stucco artist (Rotterdam c. 1646 – 1711), worked in various convents and churches of Bavaria (Tegernsee, Benediktbeuren, etc.). He had two sons: Egid Quirin (Tegernsee 1692 – Mannheim 1750) and Kosmas Damian (Benediktbeuren 1686 – Weltenburg 1739). Through their artistic training in Rome, Italian ornamental art took root and flourished in Bavaria. The masterpieces of the two brothers include the decorations of S. Jacopo in Innsbruck, the cathedral of Freising, and above all the construction and decoration of the Weltenburg convent and the church of S. Giovanni Nepomuceno in Munich. Kosmas Damian also worked in Rome with Giuseppe Ghezzi (v.); he painted in the Trinità in Munich and in the Weingarten convent, where he executed large frescoes. He is one of the most important Bavarian painters of the 18th century.
