BANDINI, GIOVANNI

BANDINI, GIOVANNI. - Sculptor, b. at Castello (Florence) perhaps in 1540, d. at Florence on 16 Apr. 1599, called Giovanni dell'Opera because he worked in the Opera del Duomo of Florence. He was a pupil of Baccio Bandinelli, but was able to react against Michelangelesque imitation and the mannerism of his time; among his works, his portraits are particularly praised. Of his sculptures with sacred subjects, we recall the statues of the apostles and the bas-reliefs in the choir of S. Maria del Fiore; the Presentazione di Maria and the Sposalizio della Vergine in S. Maria Novella. He sculpted the statue of Ferdinando I
