BASSI, MARTINO

BASSI, MARTINO. - Architect, b. at Seregno in 1542, d. in 1591. In Milan, where he almost always worked, he was commissioned in 1567 to continue the church of S. Vittore, begun by Galeazzo Alessi. In a book of his (Dispareri in materia d'architettura e per-spettiva con pareri di eccellenti e famosi architetti), composed in 1570, he opposed the designs of the architect of the Duomo, ALTDORFER, ALBRECHT (v.), whose position he occupied in 1587 and held until his death. He worked on the church of S. Lorenzo; completed the façade of S. Maria presso S. Celso and finished the church of S. Fedele. Outside Milan he worked on the choir of the Certosa of Pavia.
