BASSI, MARTINO. - Architect, b. at Seregno in 1542, d. in 1591. In Milan, where he worked almost always, he was commissioned in 1567 to continue the church of S. Vittore, begun by Galeazzo Alessi. In a book of his (Dispareri in materia d'architettura e perspetitiva con pareri di eccellenti e famosi architetti), composed in 1570, he opposed the designs of the architect of the Cathedral, Pellegrino Tibaldi (v.), whose post he occupied in 1587, holding it until his death. He worked for the church of S. Lorenzo; he finished the façade of S. Maria presso S. Celso and completed the church of S. Fedele. Outside Milan he worked on the choir of the Certosa of Pavia.
