BASSI, MARTINO. - Architect, b. at Seregno in 1542, d. in 1591. In Milan, where he worked almost continuously, he was commissioned in 1567 to continue the church of S. Vittore, begun by Galeazzo Alessi. In a book of his (Dispareri in materia d'architettura e perspetitiva con pareri di eccellenti e famosi architetti), composed in 1570, he opposed the designs of the architect of the Duomo, ALTDORFER, ALBRECHT (v.), whose office he assumed in 1587 and retained until his death. He worked on the church of S. Lorenzo; completed the façade of S. Maria presso S. Celso and the church of S. Fedele. Outside Milan he worked on the choir of the Certosa of Pavia.
