BASSI, DOMENICO. - Born in Piancastagnaio (Siena) in 1875 and died in Florence in 1942. At the age of 22 he entered the Congregation of the Barnabite religious. In 1898 he went to Florence to teach Latin and Greek at the high school of the college at La Querce, of which he became rector in 1919. He held this position until 1928. In 1931 he was appointed General Visitor for the Roman province of his Congregation. In 1934 he taught Latin and Greek at the high school of the Barnabite seminary of St Paul in Florence.
Bassi, who was a serious and respected scholar, took an active interest in pedagogical problems, to the solution of which he contributed a rare clarity of thought derived above all from his study and deepening of Christian and classical texts, several editions of which he supervised. He also produced various works of a religious nature, including the following: *La saggezza cristiana con s. Agostino* (Florence 1910); *Il Vangelo per i giovani* (ibid. 1911); *Il pensiero religioso di s. Agostino* (Rome 1928); *Il vangelo e la vita di Gesù* (Florence 1933); *S. Agostino, Il Vangelo e la vita di Maria* (ibid. 1934); *La barricata. Difesa sintetica della Chiesa* (Rome 1936); *Le ultime parole al martire. Attorno alla culla di Gesù* (Florence 1937). Among his pedagogical works are to be noted: *La saggezza nell'educazione* (Venice 1928); *In famiglia, saggi di educazione* (Rome 1929); *Quintiliano maestro* (Florence 1930); *Il pensiero morale e pedagogico di Plutarco* (ibid. 1937).
