AUROGALLUS (GOLDHAHN), MATTHAEUS. - Lutheran philologist, b. c. 1490 at Komotau (Bohemia); came to Wittenberg (1519), where he became (1521) professor of Hebrew, on the recommendation of Luther and Melanchthon; rector of the University in 1542, d. 10 Nov. 1543.
From 1520 he assisted Luther, who often mentions him in his letters, in the translation of the Old Testament, by reviewing and correcting. From 1539 to 1541 he was a frequent participant in the “synod of excellent men” (J. Mathesius) who, together with Luther, corrected his Bible, alongside Melanchthon, Bugenhagen, Jonas, Creutzinger, Ziegler, Forstemius. He published: *Grammatica hebraea chaldaeaeque linguae*, Wittenberg 1525; *Liber de hebraeis urbium, regionum, populorum, fluminum, montium et aliorum locorum nominibus ex V. T. collectis*, ibid. 1526. For both works he prepared a “editio auctor,” Basel 1539.
