AUROGALLUS (GOLDHAHN), MATTHAEUS. - Lutheran philologist, b. about 1490 at Komotau (Bohemia); having come to Wittenberg (1519), he became there (1521) professor of Hebrew, on the recommendation of Luther and Melanchthon; rector of the University in 1542, d. 10 Nov. 1543.
From 1520 he assisted Luther, who often mentions him in his letters, in the translation of the Old Testament, revising and correcting II. From 1539 to 1541 he regularly attended the “synod of excellent men” (J. Mathesius) who, together with Luther, corrected his Bible, alongside Melanchthon, Bugenhagen, Jonas, Crentzinger, Ziegler, and Forstemius. He published: Grammatica hebraeae chaldacaeque linguae, Wittenberg 1525; Liber de hebraeae urbium, regionum, populorum, fluminum, montium et aliorum locorum nominibus ex V. T. collectis, ibid. 1526. He prepared an “editio auctior” of the two works, Basel 1539.
