AURORA. - Daily newspaper published in Rome from January 1, 1880 to July 11, 1881. It was founded under the auspices of Leo XIII, chiefly through the efforts of the Olivetan monsignor Placido M. Schiaffino, and was edited, until January 31, 1881, by the historian monsignor Pietro Balan (v.). The newspaper, which in its subtitle carried the description "political, religious, literary," was not neither an official nor an unofficial organ of the Holy See. It was believed to be inspired by "conciliationist" principles, and it engaged in heated polemics with intransigent newspapers, in particular with the Osservatore cattolico of Milan. Its sudden end was attributed to a note that appeared in its columns concerning certain ecclesiastical promotions, which was said to have displeased Leo XIII. The newspaper, which was of a very large format (64 x 47 cm.), frequently availed itself of distinguished contributors.
