Babylonia of the Chaldeans

BABYLONIA of the CHALDEANS. — The patriarch of the Chaldeans (converted from Nestorianism) bears the title of B. The patriarchate was established in 1834 after the suppression of the Catholic patriarchate of Diarbekir, whose last incumbent had died in 1827 (the patriarchs of Diarbekir had already called themselves patriarchs of B., beginning with Giuseppe II in 1696). The Patriarch’s diocese is that of Bagdad-Mossul. He resides in Mossul or in Bagdad.
