- Positive theologian, born on March 4, 1833, in Aislingen (Bavaria); died on September 24, 1901, in Munich. Ordained a priest in 1856, he earned his doctorate in 1859. In 1867, he was appointed extraordinary professor, and in 1872, ordinary professor at the University of Munich. He dedicated himself to deepening the study of medieval dogmatic thought, particularly the Christological problem in German authors, producing a magnificent historical work enriched with a series of unpublished documents, an opus still consulted with profit.
He published: *Meister Eckardt der Vater der deutschen Spekulation* (Vienna 1864); *Die Siebenzahl der Sakramente* (Regensburg 1864); his article on Gerhock von Reichersberg (1093–1169), in *Österreichische Vierteljahrschrift für Katholische Theologie*, 1865, pp. 10–118, gained considerable attention; *Die Dogmengeschichte des Mittelalters vom christologischen Standpunkt oder die mittelalterliche Christologie vom XIII–XIV Jahrhundert* (2 vols., Vienna 1873–75); *Albertus Magnus Verhältnis zur Erkenntnislehre der Griechen, Lateiner und Juden* (Vienna 1881).
