BARTHOLOMEW of Modena. - Dominican theologian and preacher, probably born in Modena, he served as inquisitor in Ferrara, whence he is also called Bartholomew of Ferrara, though this refers to the same person. Only vague information about him survives. In 1378 he was residing in Ferrara, where he was a disciple of Raymond of Capua. In 1411 he gave testimony regarding the virtues of Catherine of Siena in the Castellano process; from 1411 to 1414 he served as prior of the convent of SS. John and Paul in Venice. He died in Ferrara in 1448 and was buried there with a fitting epitaph in the Dominican convent.
Various treatises and sermons, including a discourse on the stigmata of St. Catherine of Siena, which remain in manuscript, are attributed to him by Echard, Tiraboschi, and De Wilde; the *Tractatus de Christo Jesu abscondito in solemnitate corporis Christi* in six books was published in Venice by the Franciscan from Ferrara, Francesco Vicedominio.
