BARTOLOMEO da MODENA. - Dominican theologian and preacher; probably born in Modena, he was inquisitor in Ferrara, whence he was also called da Ferrara, although he was the same person. Only vague information is available about him. He was residing in Ferrara in 1378, where he was a disciple of Raimondo da Capua. In 1411 he testified concerning the virtues of Caterina da Siena in the Castellano trial; from 1411 to 1414 he was prior of the convent of SS. Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. He died in Ferrara in 1448 and was buried there, with a worthy epitaph, in the Dominican convent.
Various treatises and sermons, including a discourse on the stigmata of s. Caterina da Siena, surviving in manuscript, are attributed to him by Echard, Tiraboschi, and De Wilde; the Tractatus de Christo Jesu abscondito in solemnitate corporis Christi libris VI distinctus was published in Venice by the Franciscan of Ferrara Francesco Vicedominio.
