BARTOLOMEO DA MODENA. - Dominican theologian and preacher; b. probably at Modena, he was inquisitor at Ferrara, whence he is also called da Ferrara, although it is a question of the same person. Only vague information about him is available. He was residing in 1378 at Ferrara, where he was a disciple of Raymond of Capua. In 1411 he testified on the virtues of Catherine of Siena in the Castellano process; from 1411 to 1414 he was prior of the convent of Sts. John and Paul in Venice. He died at Ferrara in 1448 and was buried there with a worthy epitaph in the Dominican convent.

Various treatises and sermons, among them a discourse on the stigmata of St. Catherine of Siena, which remained in manuscript, are attributed to him by Echard, by Tiraboschi and by De Wilde; the Tractatus de Christo Jesu abscondito in solemnitate corporis Christi libris VI distinctus was published at Venice by the Ferrarese Franciscan Francesco Vicedominio.
