CASTELLANO (DE CASTELLO), ALBERTO. – Dominican historical scholar and ascetical writer, originally from Venice, probably belonging to the Venetian convent of SS. Giovanni e Paolo. He rendered distinguished service as editor of various ecclesiastical and biblical texts, as well as legislative, canonical, and historical works of his Order. In a letter of 1500 addressed to Gaetano, vicar general of the Order, he says that for twenty years he had been charged by the masters general Torriani (d. 1500) and Bandelli (d. 1506) with correcting books to be printed, and that Bandelli had entrusted him with the edition of the constitutions; since this was not yet ready at Bandelli’s death, it is now dedicated to Gaetano. Quétif and Echard therefore consider C. in 1507 to have been a mature man
Curò l'edizione del Pontificale romano (Roma 1497), della Biblia latina cum pleno apparatu (Venezia 1506), Seronines b. Zenonis Veronensis ep., Homiliae et admonitiones b. Caesarii Arelatensis ep., Sermo de laudibus B. V. Mariae (ivi 1508), Biblia cum concordantiis (ivi 1519), poi – probabilmente – Tabula super privilegia papalia Ordini Praedicatorum concessa. Chronica brevis (ivi 1504); e certamente la Regula b. Au gustini ep.; Constitutiones Ordinis Praedicatorum (ivi 1507), Rosario de la gloriosa Vergine Maria (con silografie, ivi 1521 e spesso ancora). Nella Tabula privilegiorum C. si basa sulla tavola compilata da Francesco Pipino, nella Cronaca su quella di Giacomo di Soest (m. nel 1426 [E. Martène, Veterum scriptorum ampl. collectio, VI, Parigi 1729, coll. 344-96]) con aggiunte fino al 1504. Questa cronaca divenne poi il Chronicon Ordinis che si trova con varie rielaborazioni in calce nelle costituzioni domenicane fino al 1690.
