CASTELLANI, Castellano de'. — Priest, poet, and author of sacred plays, probably born in Prato in 1461, perhaps died in 1519. He held the extraordinary lectureship in canon law at the University of Pisa from 1489, knew Girolamo Savonarola, and for a time shared his ideas; he was a friend of the Medici and, from 1498, vicar of the bishop of Fiesole.
The best collection of his poetic works appeared in Venice in 1521 under the title *Opera spirituale di m. C. de' C.* But chiefly worthy of mention are his sacred plays: *s. Eufrasio*, *s. Onofrio* (*Storia di s. Onofrio*, in *Le sacre rappresentazioni ital.*, ed. M. Bonfantini, Milan 1942, pp. 498–535), as well as his versification of the Sunday Gospels (Florence 1514).
