CZESŁAW OF POLAND (of Silesia), Blessed. - Dominican, b. in 1180 at Gross-Stein in Upper Silesia, d. at Wrocław on 15 July 1242. Late accounts call him a companion, and Bzovio makes him a brother, of St. Hyacinth, together with whom he is said to have received the habit of the Preachers from St. Dominic in Rome, and to have then founded the convent of Friesach (Carinthia). After a stay in Kraków, C. erected the convent of St. Adalbert in Wrocław. As prior of Wrocław and as provincial of Poland he labored for the Christianization of Silesia. The liberation of the castle of Wrocław during the Mongol siege in 1241 is attributed to his prayers. His relics are in St. Adalbert. His cult was approved by Clement XI in 1712. Feast in the Dominican Order on 17 July, in the archdiocese of Wrocław on 20 July.
