Banchi, Serafino

BANCHI, SERAFINO. - Dominican writer, b. in Florence in the second half of the 1500s, d. in Paris in 1622. Having entered the Order at St. Dominic of Fiesole, he completed his studies in Paris, protected by Catherine de' Medici, on whose death he returned to his homeland (1589). Sent to France by Ferdinand I, Grand Duke of Tuscany, he foiled an attempt (1593) against Henry IV, who, grateful, offered him the bishopric of Angoulême (1604), which he refused out of humility. Having remained in Paris, he always lived in the convent of St. James. He wrote, in French, a pamphlet against the king's assailants (1586), and a work on the Rosary of the B. Virgin (1610).
