BARTOLOZZI, FRANCESCO. - Engraver of very great fame; b. in Florence in 1727 and d. in Lisbon, where he had gone in 1802 to direct the national Academy, in 1816. He learned the first elements of drawing and of copperplate engraving in his father's goldsmith's shop, in Florence. He completed his artistic education in Venice under the guidance of Wagner. The technique of stipple engraving, already devised by G. Campagnola and taken up and perfected by him, is linked to his name. He stayed in London from 1764 to 1802 and here too he had a large troop of pupils and collaborators. He rarely devised the subjects to be engraved himself; the works entirely from his own hand that remain are true masterpieces, such as, for example, La nascita del disegno. There exist more than 2000 engravings signed by him, numerous of them on sacred subjects.
