CAMPAGNOLA, GIULIO AND DOMENICO. - Engravers and painters. GIULIO, son of Girolamo, born in Padua perhaps in 1482, died after 1514. In 1498 he was at the court of Ferrara, in 1507 in Venice; in 1514 he is remembered as an engraver in the will of Aldus Manutius. In his paintings the influence of Mantegna and Giorgione is evident.
As an engraver, after wavering between Mantegnesque-Dürerian linearism and the softening of forms characteristic of the Venetian painting of his time, he executed his later prints with the technique of "pointillism," which allowed him to obtain original results, especially for the anti-classical spirit that characterizes his work. Noteworthy are the engravings taken from works by Bellini, Dürer, Mantegna, Titian, and in particular the Rape of Ganymede and the Samaritan Woman.
DOMENICO, born perhaps in 1482 in Padua, where he was still working in 1562; it is not known whether he was a relative of Giulio or merely a pupil.
In collaboration with him he executed the engraving The Concert (Albertina, Vienna), and this in a manner very different from that of Giulio. In his scant activity as a painter he was a follower of Romanino and Moretto; in 1511 he collaborated with Titian on the frescoes of the Scuole del Carmine and del Santo and on those of the Cornaro house in Padua. In 1531 he painted in Venice arabesques and figures in S. Maria del Parto, and in 1534 in the Scuola di S. Rocco; in 1562 he executed in Padua the altarpiece of St. Homobonus. This pictorial experience reveals itself, albeit through external characteristics, in his best engravings.
