CAPANNA, PUCCIO. - Painter; he was working in 1347 in Florence, where he kept a workshop. Vasari remembers him as a pupil and assistant of Giotto in Assisi (perhaps between 1320 and 1330), considering him one of the best masters of the time.
The frescoes in the vault of the Covoni chapel in Badia are attributed to him, as well as the Noli me tangere (Strozzi chapel) in S. Miniato, a visible repetition of the Giottesque one in the Arena chapel in Padua, and the collaboration on the Giottesque Crucifix on the inner door of S. Maria Novella; in Assisi, some frescoes in S. Chiara and in S. Francesco, the decoration of the vault and the twelve Scenes from the life of St. Francis in the church of the same name in Pistoia (1343); in these the C. keeps the Assisi cycle in mind, giving proof, with some reminiscence of Sienese art, of a new sensitivity to the value of lights and shadows.
