BEHAM, FRATELLI. - German painters, engravers and woodcut artists. HANS SEBALD, b. in Nuremberg in 1500, d. in Frankfurt in 1550; BARTHEL, b. in Nuremberg in 1502, d. in Italy in 1540. Together with Pencz and others they belong to the group of the so-called "Kleinmeister" (called thus because of the often very small format of their engravings), who continue the tradition of Dürer (v.), while at the same time undergoing new strong influences, especially in ornament, from Italian Renaissance art (Pollaiuolo, Mantegna), as is shown by Barthel's best-known painting, the Miracle of the Cross in the Munich picture gallery (1530).

In their engravings they interpret, besides mythological themes and scenes of popular life, religious scenes. Their skill as portraitists led to Barthel entering, from 1530, the service of the dukes of Bavaria at Munich and Landshut. - See Pl. LXXIII.
