BENVENUTI, GIOVANNI ANTONIO. - Cardinal, born at Belvedere, in the diocese of Senigaglia, on 17 March 1766; died at Osimo on 14 Nov. 1838. Created cardinal by Leone XII in the secret Consistory of 2 Oct. 1826, he was published only on 15 Dec. 1828. The following year he was elected bishop of Osimo and Cingoli. Having shown himself vigorously opposed to the uprisings of 1831, he was, as a precautionary measure, removed by the revolutionaries and taken to Bologna. Later transferred to Ancona as a hostage of the government of the United Provinces, he was subsequently released; with that same government he negotiated the capitulation of the city, which was recognized neither by the Austrians nor by the Pope.
