BENVENUTI, GIOVANNI ANTONIO. - Cardinal, b. at Belvedere, in the diocese of Senigaglia, on 17 March 1766, d. at Osimo on 14 Nov. 1838. Created cardinal by Leo XII in the secret Consistory of 2 Oct. 1826, he was published only on 15 Dec. 1828. The following year he was elected bishop of Osimo and Cingoli. Having shown himself energetically opposed to the risings of 1831, as a precautionary measure he was made to leave by the innovators and taken to Bologna. Later transferred to Ancona as a hostage of the government of the United Provinces, he was afterwards released; with that same government he negotiated the capitulation of the city, which was recognized neither by the Austrians nor by the Pope.
