BENO (BENNO, BENNONE). – Cardinal, died around 1100. Created cardinal by Stephen IX in 1058, on 5 May 1081 he took part in the Roman synod against the antipope Clement III; but in 1084 he sided against Gregory VII and justified his position in two writings, in the first of which he endeavours to prove Gregory VII’s election invalid, and in the second discusses the excommunication of the emperor Henry IV. He drew up a manifesto of the schismatic cardinals and remained a staunch opponent of Gregory VII until his death. He was in Rome in 1098 to participate in the council convened by the antipope Clement III.
