BENO (BENNO, BENNONE). - Cardinal, died around 1100. Created a cardinal by Stephen IX in 1088, on May 5, 1081 he took part in the Roman synod against the antipope Clement III, but in 1084 he sided against Gregory VII and justified his stance in two writings, in the first of which he strove to demonstrate that Gregory VII’s election was invalid, and in the second he discussed the excommunication of Emperor Henry IV. He drafted a manifesto of the schismatic cardinals and remained a stubborn opponent of Gregory VII until his death. He was in Rome in 1098 to attend the council convened by the antipope Clement III.
