Benvenuti, Pietro

BENVENUTI, PIETRO. - Painter, b. at Arezzo on 8 Jan. 1769, d. at Florence on 3 Feb. 1844. From 1782 to 1804 he lived in Rome, where he followed Camuccini and the Danish painter A. J. Carstens. From 1804 he directed the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. His paintings are numerous: The Martyrdom of St. Donatus (1794, cathedral of Arezzo), the Martyrdom of the Blessed Signoretto Alliata (1802, cathedral of Pisa), the Triumph of Judith (1803, cathedral of Arezzo), the Stories of the Old and New Testament (1827-36, frescoes in S. Lorenzo in Florence) clearly demonstrate his manner, which resolves itself into sureness of composition and correctness of drawing, from which a clear sensitivity to color is absent.

The best part of his work consists of the portraits (The Court of Elisa Baciocchi, of 1813, in the museum of Versailles, the Self-Portrait in the Uffizi, etc.).
