Bernardo Of Porto

BERNARDO di PORTO. — Cardinal, who lived in the 12th century. Magister Bernardus, as Gerhoh of Reichersberg calls him (De investigazione antichristi, I, 53), was under Innocent II and, as may be believed, during the latter’s final, more peaceful years of pontificate, prior of the cloister at the Lateran; he was appointed by Eugenius III (1145) cardinal priest of the title of S. Clemente. During the pontificate of Eugenius he appears several times as archpriest of S. Pietro. Toward the end of 1158 he is again found as cardinal bishop of Porto and S. Rufina. He died, as can be inferred from the Cassinese Necrology (L. A. Muratori, Rer. Ital. Script., VII, Milan 1725, p. 944), on 18 August 1176.
