Bernardo of Porto

BERNARDO OF PORTO. - Cardinal, lived in the 12th century. Magister Bernardus, as Gerhoh of Reichersberg calls him (De investigatione antichristi, I, 53), was prior of the cloister at the Lateran under Innocent II and, as is to be believed, during the last, more tranquil years of that pontificate, and was appointed by Eugene III (1145) cardinal priest of the title of St. Clement. During Eugene's pontificate he appears several times as archpriest of St. Peter's. Toward the end of 1158 he is found again as cardinal bishop of Porto and S. Rufina. He died, as can be inferred from the Cassinese Necrology (L. A. Muratori, Rer. Ital. Script., VII, Milan 1725, p. 944), on 18 August 1176.
