BERNWARD, Saint. - Bishop of Hildesheim (c. 960 - 1022). A descendant of a noble Saxon family, he was received by his uncle Folkmar, later bishop of Utrecht, at the cathedral school of Hildesheim. While still young, having passed from the family circle of the count palatine Atelbero to the imperial court, the empress Theophano entrusted him with the education of her son, Otto III, over whom B. had a decisive influence.
Upon the death, toward the end of 992, of the bishop of Hildesheim, Gerdag, B. was elected to succeed him. From then on he devoted himself to the good and the progress of his diocese. A promoter of the development of culture, he spread it among his subjects also by means of libraries. The founder of numerous monasteries, legend makes him also a manual collaborator in their rise and an artist himself, as well as an enthusiastic guide of artistic constructions. He died after having assumed the Benedictine habit, on 20 Nov. 1022. Celestine IIIcanonized him on 20 Dec. 1192. Benedict XIV introduced him in 1748 into the Roman Martyrology under 26 Oct.
