BERNARDO DI SAN PIETRO IN VINCOLI. - Cardinal of the 12th century, created by Alexander III with the title of St. Nicholas in Carcere, probably in 1178, and on the death of Cardinal Guglielmo transferred to the presbyteral title of St. Peter in Chains. Celestine III and Innocent III entrusted him with important legations in the final years of the 12th century. Pope Innocent, as soon as he was elected, sent him with his colleague Pandolfo Pisano to Tuscia and Spoleto, and the following year (early 1199), alone, to Lombardy, to protect, as he did with great authority and learning, the rights of the Holy See against the metropolitans and the communes. He died perhaps in that same year 1199.
