PACIO and GIOVANNI da FIRENZE - Florentine sculptors, who are found active in Naples in 1343, engaged on the mausoleum of Robert I of Anjou the Wise, in the church of St. Clare.
The mausoleum, of incomparable solemnity, consists of a broad Gothic canopy, resting on clustered piers, divided by polygonal rings, where between the piers and the gables stands a whole series of patriarchs, prophets and saints. The urn, resting on piers, against which are set the statues of six
Virtues, bears on the front and the sides figures of the King and his family; upon it, within the burial chamber, whose curtains two angels hold raised, lies the recumbent statue of the King, clothed in the Franciscan habit, and watched over by the 7 Arts of the trivium and quadrivium. Above, beneath the canopy, the King, seated in a faldstool, his face reflecting the death mask, with frescoed figures of prelates and barons, and still higher the Virgin with St. Francis and St. Clare, and at her feet the King.
The grandiose whole follows the type established by Tino di Camaino, enriched, however, plastically, in the manner of Nino Pisano.
To P. and G. is also due the tomb of Louis of Durazzo, in the same church, and probably the ancient altar of the church of St. Clare; whereas the reliefs of the legend of St. Catherine are not their work.
