NINO PISANO. - Sculptor and architect, b. in Pisa in the early years of the 14th century, d. there in 1368. He divided his activity among Florence, Pisa and Orvieto, where in 1349 he is recorded as master builder in the construction of the Cathedral.

Some documents also record an activity of his as a goldsmith, of which no trace has been preserved. His principal works:

Madonna and Child, on the exterior of the oratory of the Spina in Pisa, where the group of the Madonna del Colle is also his, another Madonna and Child, signed, on the Cavalcanti tomb in S. Maria Novella in Florence, the tomb of Marco Cornaro in the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, and the Annunciation in S. Caterina in Pisa. A number of elegant wooden sculptures, chiefly preserved in the Pisan Museum, are also attributed to N. Among the sculptors who derive from Andrea Pisano, N. is the most gifted, although his personality cannot advantageously be compared with that of his father or of the other masters active at the beginning of the 16th century. Nevertheless he was able to express himself gracefully in a simple and plain language, accessible to all, also exerting a notable influence on other sculptors active in his time in Florence and Pisa. His brother TOMMASO was his mediocre imitator and assistant.
