BIXIO, GIUSEPPE. — Missionary, brother of the Garibaldian general Nino. Born in Genoa on 23 May 1819, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1838. Professor of rhetoric in Cagliari, when the revolution of 1848 expelled the Jesuits from Sardinia, he went to the United States, working until 1855 in Maryland, then in California. The American Civil War (1860) recalled him to the eastern states, where he served as chaplain to the troops, not without running grave risks due to suspicion of espionage. After the war he resumed his pastoral duties in California (except for a year in Australia, 1878–79), first in San José, then in Santa Clara, where he died on 3 March 1889. Pained by his brother’s stance, he was eager to make amends for the harm done to the Church by his brother’s actions through his own apostolic zeal.
