Bonacina, Martino

BONACINA, MARTINO. - Moralist, born in Milan around 1585. Professor of canon and civil law in the seminary and then rector of the Helvetic college of the same city, founded by St. Charles Borromeo. Having gone to Rome, he was called by Cardinal I. Aldobrandini to be his own theologian on account of his learning, and Urban VIII appointed him titular bishop of Utica. He died while on his way as nuncio to Vienna (1631).

His Theologia moralis (Lyons 1624), published several times and also abridged into compendia, remains a classic work for its erudition, the depth of its doctrine and its clarity. In it he shows himself a supporter of probabilism.
