BONNET, ALFRED-MAXIMILIEN. - French philologist, b. in Frankfurt am Main on 3 Nov. 1841, to a Swiss Huguenot family; he obtained French nationality and d. at Montpellier on 20 Feb. 1917. He studied in Paris and in England; in 1866 he was professor of Latin at the Academy of Lausanne, in 1881 an associate of the faculty of letters at Montpellier, where from 1890 he became full professor of Latin literature, a chair he held until 1911. In 1898 he was elected a corresponding member of the «Académie des inscriptions».

He wrote numerous articles on philological and hagiographical subjects in the journals: Revue Critique, Byzantinische Zeitschrift, and principally in the Analecta Bollandiana (about fifteen, between the years 1889-1905). We recall some of his works that bear directly on the ecclesiastical sciences: Le latin de Grégoire de Tours (Paris 1890) and in particular the Acta apostolorum apocrypha post E. Tischendorf denuo ediderunt R. A. Lipsius et M. B., I (by Lipsius, Leipzig 1891); II (by B., part 1, ibid. 1898; part 2, ibid. 1903).
