BONNET, Alfred-Maximilien. - French philologist, born in Frankfurt am Main on 3 Nov. 1841, from a Swiss Huguenot family; he obtained French nationality and died in Montpellier on 20 Feb. 1917. He studied in Paris and England; in 1866 he was professor of Latin at the Academy of Lausanne, in 1881 he was appointed to the faculty of letters in Montpellier, where from 1890 he became full professor of Latin literature, a chair he held until 1911. In 1898 he was elected corresponding member of the «Académie des inscriptions».
He wrote numerous articles on philological and hagiographical topics in the journals: Revue Critique, Byzantinische Zeitschrift, and mainly in the Analecta Bollandiana (about fifteen, between the years 1889-1905). Let us recall some of his works that directly concern ecclesiastical sciences: Le latin de Grégoire de Tours (Paris 1890) and in particular the Acta apostolorum apocrypha post E. Tischendorf denuo ediderunt R. A. Lipsius et M. B., I (by Lipsius, Leipzig 1891); II (by B., part 1, ibid. 1898; part 2, ibid. 1903).
