BORGIOTTI, LUISA. – Co-founder of the Sisters of Jesus of Nazareth, born in Turin on 16 Feb. 1802, died there in a reputation for holiness on 23 Feb. 1873. She was an example of a holy domestic life and dedicated herself to the education of her younger siblings. After various spiritual struggles, she returned to her former fervor and enrolled (1834) in the Pious Association of the Humiliated, where she served as sub-prioress until her death, zealously visiting the sick and providing dowries for poor girls. She entered (1865) the Institute first called of the Passion and later of Jesus of Nazareth, founded in Turin at that time by Marco A. Durando, a priest of the Mission, for the care and assistance of the sick at home. She remained there as superior until her death, setting an example of charity and austerity.
Her body, exhumed in 1905, rests in the church of the Visitation in Turin. The cause of her beatification was introduced on 12 Apr. 1916.
BORGO, CARLO. – Man of letters and polemicist, born in Vicenza on 26 July 1731, died in Parma in 1794.
He entered the Jesuits in 1746 and taught literature in various colleges and theology in Modena. After the suppression of the Society of Jesus by Clement XIV, he devoted himself to literary activity.
His *Analisi ed esame aggiornato della difesa e della fortificazione delle piazze* (Venice 1775), dedicated to Frederick II, earned him a honorary lieutenant-colonel’s commission in the engineering corps. The anonymous *Memoria cattolica da presentarsi a Sua Santità*, a posthumous work (sic!, Cosmopoli 1780), a vigorous defense of the suppressed Society, was placed on the Index on 3 June 1781 and its printers were arrested; a second enlarged edition was included by Fr. Francesco Rica in *Aneddoti interessanti di storia e di critica sulla memoria cattolica* (1782). A *Seconda memoria cattolica* (3 vols., 1783-84), condemned in 1786, is not by B., but perhaps by the Sardinian Jesuit Bonifazio Dolmi. The *oration in praise of St. Ignatius* delivered by B. in Reggio Emilia in 1781 was reprinted and translated many times. The *Novena in preparation for the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus* (Florence 1786) was translated into eight languages and reproduced in countless editions. Finally, noteworthy is his intervention in the controversy against the Synod of Pistoia with the *Prima e la Seconda lettera ad un prelato romano* (Hala [but Assisi] 1789-90).
