BORSANO (BROSSANO), SIMONE DI. - Cardinal, born of a Milanese family, he became a doctor of both laws, in which he was later a distinguished master. He was archdeacon of Bologna when he was appointed archbishop of Milan on 18 July 1371, but he remained in the service of the Avignon Curia. He left that see when Gregory XI, on 20 Dec. 1375, created him cardinal of Sts. John and Paul. He took part in the Conclave in which Urban VI was elected in Apr. 1378. When the ultramontane cardinals began their intrigues against Urban, B. together with Cardinals Orsini and Corsini, the only Italians, was charged by him with negotiations to avoid an open rebellion; but he lent himself to the rebels' game and concurred in the election of the antipope Clement VII. With all hope of agreement lost, he betook himself to Nice, where he died on 27 Aug. 1381 and was buried. Commentaries on the Digest and on the Clementines are remembered as his.
