GIOVANNI BRESADOLA. — Priest and mycologist, born at Ortisei (Trento) on 14 Feb. 1847, died at Trento on 9 June 1927. Ordained priest in 1870, he served as chaplain in various places and as parish priest at Magnas, moving to Trento in 1884; first as administrator of the Cathedral Chapter, then as a pensioner. On the occasion of his 80th birthday he was made a corresponding member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, *Nuovi Lincei*, by Pius XI.
He devoted himself passionately to the study of fungi, especially micromycetes and basidiomycetes, revising and systematizing catalogues of species, discovering new ones and corresponding with the leading mycologists of the world. Besides many articles in specialist journals, he published: *Funghi mangerecci e velenosi nell'Europa media* (Milan 1879); *Fungi tridentini noci et nondum delineati, descripti et iconibus illustrati* (I, Trento 1881; II, ibid. 1892-1900). His scientific output was collected and published in 26 volumes with 1,000 plates by G. B. Traverso (Milan 1917-33). Thus, besides other species, more than 1,000 new ones were described. His herbaria were also highly valued and acquired by scientific museums in Europe and America.
