BRANDI, SALVATORE MARIA. - Jesuit, writer, b. in Naples on 2 May 1852, d. there on 5 Sept. 1915. After completing his studies in theology at Woodstock, in the United States, he was immediately appointed there as professor of philosophy and theology, first as colleague and then as successor of his teacher, the future Cardinal C. Mazzella. The latter, in 1891, had him summoned to La Civiltà Cattolica, of which he was director from 1905. From 1906 he was at the same time rector of the College of Writers.

He wrote with singular competence and effectiveness on questions that were then burning issues, of politics, of jurisprudence, of Sacred Scripture, among them: Sul regio patronato della chiesa patriarcale di Venezia (Rome 1893); La questione biblica e l'enciclica « Providentissimus » (ibid. 1894); Dell'unione delle Chiese (ibid. 1896); La condanna delle ordinazioni anglicane (ibid. 1897); Di chi è il Vaticano? (ibid. 1904); L'estraterritorialità del Vaticano (ibid. 1904); I Cardinali di S. R. Chiesa nel diritto pubblico (ibid. 1905).
