SALVATORE MARIA BRANDI. — Jesuit, writer, born in Naples on 2 May 1852, died there on 5 September 1915. After completing his theological studies at Woodstock in the United States, he immediately became a professor of philosophy and theology, first a colleague and then the successor of his teacher, the future cardinal C. Mazzella. In 1891, Mazzella called him to La Civiltà Cattolica, of which he became director in 1905. From 1906 he simultaneously served as rector of the College of Writers.
He wrote with singular competence and effectiveness on then pressing issues of politics, jurisprudence, and Sacred Scripture, including: *Sul regio patronato della chiesa patriarcale di Venezia* (Rome 1893); *La questione biblica e l'enciclica «Prosvalentissimus»* (ibid. 1894); *Dell'unione delle Chiese* (ibid. 1896); *La condanna delle ordinazioni anglicane* (ibid. 1897); *Di chi è il Vaticano?* (ibid. 1904); *L'extraterritorialità del Vaticano* (ibid. 1904); *I Cardinali di S.
