BRANDI, SALVATORE MARIA. - Jesuit, writer, b. at Napoli on 2 May 1852, d. there on 5 Sept. 1915. Having completed his theological studies at Woodstock, in the United States, he immediately became professor of philosophy and theology there, first colleague and then successor of his teacher, the future cardinal C. Mazzella. In 1891 the latter had him called to La Civiltà Cattolica, of which he was director from 1905. From 1906 he was at the same time rector of the College of Writers.
He wrote with singular competence and effectiveness on questions then of pressing concern in politics, jurisprudence, and Sacred Scripture, including: Sul regio patronato della chiesa patriarcale di Venezia (Roma 1893); La questione biblica e l'enciclica « Providentissimus » (there 1894); Dell'unione delle Chiese (there 1896); La condanna delle ordinazioni anglicane (there 1897); Di chi è il Vaticano? (there 1904); L'estraterritorialità del Vaticano (there 1904); I Cardinali di S. R. Chiesa nel diritto pubblico (there 1905).
