POLIDORO DA CARAVAGGIO. - Painter, b. c. 1500 at Caravaggio, d. at Messina (killed by a servant boy for the purpose of robbery) in 1543. Lomazzo has handed down his surname: Caldara.

With Maturino the Florentine he executed numerous monochrome fresco friezes, in imitation of ancient bas-reliefs, which decorated the Roman palaces; but they did not withstand the atmospheric agents; there nevertheless remain the "friezes with the story of Niobe" in Via della Maschera d'Oro, and the decoration of the Palazzo Ricci Parracciani in Via Giulia. There also remain numerous drawings by P. da C., in various collections, and numerous engravings taken from his graffiti or monochromes executed with Maturino.

Furthermore, to P. da C. and Maturino belong the first examples of classical landscape, by way of a picturesque taste that goes back to Hellenistic pictorial experiences, in the frescoes (no longer monochrome) of the Chapel of Fra' Mariano, in S. Silvestro al Quirinale. At Messina he made for Ansalone, consul of Spain, an Ascent to Calvary, now in the Pinacoteca of Naples, where the Raphaelesque tradition appears interpreted through Flemish impressions.
