POCCETTI, BERNARDINO BARBATELLI, DETTO IL

POCCETTI, Bernardino Barbatelli, known as il. Painter, also called Bernardino delle Facciate, delle Muse and delle Grottesche, b. in Florence in 1548, d. there on 9 Nov. 1612.

In 1580 and 1585 he worked in Florence in the large cloister of S. Maria Novella; between 1591 and 1606 he painted in Florence in the Certosa of Galluzzo and executed frescoes in S. Spirito, S. Trinità, the Ospedale degli Innocenti (1610), the convent of S. Apollonia, etc. With the frescoes of the Certosa, with Stories of St. Bruno; lunettes of the Museum of S. Marco; the Cenacolo of the Galleria di Belle Arti in Siena, etc., he is directly linked to the Florentine tradition from Domenico Ghirlandaio to Andrea del Sarto. Likewise in the frescoes of the Villa Artimino near Signa, or in “La Loggia” with the legend of Amor and Psyche, in the Villa Torrigiani in S. Martino alla Palma. The oil self-portrait of P. is in the Pitti Gallery in Florence.
